The North Point Ferry Pier and North Point Estate were completed in 1957, and the bus terminus at Pier Plaza was also put into use in 1958. After serving for half a century, the bus terminus has now been retired. The North Point Ferry Pier currently has routes to and from Hung Hom, Kowloon City, and Kwun Tong, which can be reached in just a few minutes. There are several seafood stalls inside the North Point Ferry Pier, with many of them advertising "releasing" of animals.

Although religious groups have held releasing ceremonies for many years, the act of releasing animals has become increasingly controversial in recent years.

放生 (fàng shēng) is a Buddhist practice of releasing captive animals or insects back into their natural habitat as an act of compassion and to accumulate good karma.

Last year, Legislator Ho Chun-Yin questioned the Secretary for Food and Health, asking how the Food and Health Bureau would follow up if animals were released to unsuitable places, or if unsuitable animals were released, which could damage the ecological environment. The Bureau replied that there are currently no laws prohibiting releasing activities. It has now collaborated with three organizations that are concerned with releasing activities, including Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden, the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, and the Hong Kong Society of Herpetology, to design a poster about the impact of releasing activities, educating citizens about the potential consequences.
